Today, I’m writing about Edward Lear.  I love Lear, as I think I have mentioned before.  His poems and illustrations are so clever they make me laugh out loud.  And laughter?  A rare commodity in dissertation research.

I think it is serendipitous that this Leary day is also the birthday of Shel Silverstein, another humorous poet-illustrator for children.  Happy birthday, Shel Silverstein!  I wish you were still around.  You wrote some great poetry for kids, and I find you charming, despite the creepy photo you chose for your dust jackets.  In celebration of the day of your birth, I will share one of my favorite poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends:

Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich

A hippo sandwich is easy to make
All you do is simply take
One slice of bread,
One slice of cake,
Some mayonnaise
One onion ring,
One hippopotamus,
One piece of string,
A dash of pepper —
That ought to do it.
And now comes the problem…
Biting into it!
