yes, you. the person who thinks victorian literature is boring.
i learned today that, in 1973, playboy printed excerpts (accompanied by a photo spread, of course) of christina rossetti’s mid-nineteenth-century poem “goblin market.” many of you have probably read this poem. it is much anthologized. i think playboy probably included this among the most titilating passages:
She cried “Laura” up the garden,
“Did you miss me?
Come and kiss me.
Never mind my bruises,
Hug me, kiss me, suck my juices
Squeezed from goblin fruit for you,
Goblin pulp and goblin dew.
Eat me, drink me, love me;
Laura, make much of me:
For your sake I have braved the glen
And had to do with goblin merchant men.
that christina. she was a kinky little minx. and the frontispiece of the volume that contained this poem (which was extremely popular in the nursery) didn’t help matters much.
