today in my feminist debates class, everyone brought in “cultural objects” that demonstrated how the concepts we’ve been discussing in the seminar — e.g. hetero-normativity, public and private spheres, intensive motherhood — are represented in mass culture.  one of my fellow english students brought in a copy of a magazine for women who enjoy the outdoors (in the hunting and bass fishing sort of way).  the magazine contained an article about how to handle one’s emotions after a “first kill” as a hunter.

the tag line was:

staying true to your emotions is just as important as killing an animal.

and i’m not kidding.
